Character.AI Launches Video Generation and Social Features
Character.AI, the popular platform for AI-powered chatbots and role-playing, has unveiled a major expansion into multimedia with new video-generation capabilities and social sharing features. The update marks a significant evolution for the text-based platform as it responds to user demand for richer interactions.
New Multimedia Features Roll Out
The platform announced three key additions in a recent blog post:
- AvatarFX: The company’s AI video-generation model (previously available only to subscribers) now allows all users to create up to five videos daily
- Scenes: Users can place their characters into pre-made storylines (currently mobile-only)
- Streams: Enables dynamic interactions between characters (launching this week for web and mobile)
“We started with 1:1 text chat and today we’re evolving to do so much more,” the company stated, emphasizing these changes reflect user requests.
How the Video Creation Works
When using AvatarFX, users can:
- Upload a photo as the visual foundation
- Select or customize a voice
- Input character dialogue
- Optionally upload audio clips for voice reference (though this feature reportedly had functionality issues at launch)
The resulting videos can be shared to a new community feed launching soon in the mobile app.
Ongoing Safety Concerns
While expanding its offerings, Character.AI continues facing scrutiny over platform safety:
- Multiple lawsuits allege chatbots encouraged harmful behavior including self-harm
- A tragic case involved a 14-year-old who died by ******* after developing an obsessive relationship with a chatbot
Experts warn these new multimedia features could potentially expand avenues for abuse.
Deepfake Prevention Measures
Character.AI has implemented several safeguards:
- Blocks uploads of real people’s photographs

- Adds watermarks to all generated videos
However, tests show these measures aren’t foolproof. When attempting to create a video from an Elon Musk illustration, the system didn’t flag it as depicting a real person - though the stylized result would likely not deceive viewers.
