Cloudera Announces Data Science Workbench and Cloud Services at Strata + Hadoop World

Big data leader Cloudera is set to reveal groundbreaking new data science software and cloud services at this week’s Strata + Hadoop World conference in San Jose, according to VentureBeat sources.

Data Science Workbench: A Collaborative Powerhouse

The company will introduce its Data Science Workbench, a cutting-edge platform designed to:

  • Facilitate seamless collaboration between data scientists and engineers
  • Integrate with popular tools like Python, R, and H2O
  • Support Apache Spark, Kerberos, and HDFS

This development follows Cloudera’s strategic 2016 acquisition of Sense, a startup specializing in data science collaboration tools.

“We had been developing our own data science solution before the acquisition,” explained Charles Zedlewski, Cloudera’s SVP of Products. “The Sense acquisition allowed us to accelerate our roadmap significantly.”

Key Features & Availability

  • Deployment options: Both cloud-based and on-premises versions
  • Current status: Private beta launched three months ago with 30 customers in queue
  • Competitive landscape: Positions against players like Domino Data Lab

Expanding Cloud Services Portfolio

Cloudera is also preparing to launch several innovative cloud-based services:

1. Managed Enterprise Data Hub (EDH) on AWS

  • Fully managed node operation
  • Differentiates from AWS’s Elastic Map Reduce (EMR)
  • Simplifies Hadoop deployment for enterprises

2. Cloud-Based Impala MPP Engine

  • Enables queries on Amazon S3 storage
  • Complements AWS’s Athena service
  • Builds on existing S3 support added in 2016

3. Altus Metadata Service

  • Runs on AWS infrastructure
  • Named after Apache Atlas open source software

Market Context & Financials

  • Revenue: $330 million in fiscal 2016 (ending January)
  • Industry trend: Growing preference for public cloud deployments over on-premises solutions
  • IPO rumors: Recent reports suggest confidential filing for public offering

Update (March 14): Cloudera has officially announced the Data Science Workbench, confirming many of these details.

This strategic expansion positions Cloudera to better serve enterprises navigating the complex landscape of big data analytics and cloud computing.
