How Deep Fission’s Technology Works
Unlike traditional reactors requiring massive concrete containment, Deep Fission leverages geology for safety:
- Design: Pressurized-water reactors (common in submarines and power plants)
- Installation: Lowered via cables into 1-mile-deep, 30-inch boreholes
- Power Generation: Steam generators convert heat into energy, piped to the surface
- Maintenance: Reactors can be retrieved in 1-2 hours if needed
Cost and Timeline Advantages
- Targeted Cost: 5–7 cents/kWh (less than half of Lazard’s estimated U.S. nuclear costs)
- Deployment Goal: First reactor operational by 2029, aligning with industry peers
Regulatory Landscape
Deep Fission began NRC licensing in March 2025. A new law mandates 18-month reviews for small modular reactors (SMRs). Only Kairos has cleared this process so far.
