Evernote Expands SDKs for iOS & Android with China & Business Support

Evernote, the popular personal data app boasting 45 million users, continues its aggressive expansion with significant updates to its iOS and Android SDKs. These enhancements align with the company’s vision to become the central hub for personal and professional information management.

Key Updates in the iOS SDK

The latest iOS SDK introduces two major features:

  • Yinxiang Biji Support: Full integration with Evernote’s China-based service, enabling seamless cross-platform functionality.
  • Evernote Business Compatibility: Developers can now build apps that interface with both consumer and business accounts simultaneously.

These updates leverage Evernote’s bootstrapping protocol, creating a unified bridge between its global platform and the standalone Chinese service.

Technical Improvements for iOS Developers

Mustafa Furniturewala, Evernote’s iOS SDK lead, highlighted several developer-focused enhancements:

  • New utility classes for streamlined note creation
  • Objective-C categories for easier access to business/shared notes
  • Optimized HTTP Thrift layer implementation
  • Sample code for photo notes, Business APIs, and shared notes
  • Critical bug fixes and memory leak resolutions

Android SDK Overhaul

While the Android SDK update doesn’t yet include China or Business support (planned for the next release), it delivers substantial improvements:

  • Complete rewrite of core components including EvernoteSession
  • Migration to Library Project structure
  • Apache Maven support with Maven Central sync
  • Modernized Holo-style UI interface
  • Background thread processing for blocking requests
  • New OAuth authentication flow
  • Expanded sample app (HelloEdam) with demonstration features

Ty Smith, Evernote’s Android SDK engineer, emphasized the focus on making the SDK “easier to use” and competitive with other Android libraries.

Evernote’s Platform Strategy

These SDK updates reinforce Evernote’s ambition to become the central repository for personal and professional data. The company recently secured $85 million in funding and launched Evernote Business across seven countries.

Future Developments

Looking ahead, Evernote plans to:

  • Add ARC support for iOS
  • Enhance OAuth experience
  • Provide more sample codes for easier integration
  • Roll out Yinxiang Biji and Business support for Android

These strategic updates position Evernote as a more powerful platform for developers building connected productivity applications across global markets.
