Smart Reply, the intelligent A.I.-powered technology that automatically generates responses to your inbound messages, has been making waves since its debut in Google’s email client Inbox over two years ago. Since then, it has been rolled out to Gmail and Android Messages on Project Fi. Now, a team within Google’s internal incubator Area 120 is working to bring this feature to other chat applications.
The new project, called ‘Reply’, will initially be available for Android users. The project can be found in the announcements made through Area 120’s web form. Reply aims to provide suggested responses to questions such as ‘Are you at the restaurant?’ or ‘When can you be home?’, while considering a user’s current location.
Reply will also include other automated features, such as a Do Not Disturb mode that silences your phone when driving and alerts those who message you. It will also offer a Vacation Responder that checks your calendar on your behalf to notify people if you are not working. In case of an urgent message like ‘We’re waiting for you!’, Reply can get your attention.
The project is currently in the early stages of development and is unrelated to Google’s broader messaging efforts. However, the idea behind it is promising as Smart Reply has become one of the most useful features within Gmail, particularly for those with a lot of inbound messages or who answer their emails on-the-go.
Google confirmed that this experiment is in progress, but did not share further details such as the team members working on Reply at Area 120 or the expected launch time. Nonetheless, bringing Smart Reply to other chat applications could help push some users towards adopting Android over iOS, and prompt them to use Gmail if they find it useful.
The project is part of Google’s internal incubator Area 120, which aims to explore new ideas and technologies within the company. While it is currently in development, there are no details available on when it will be released or who exactly will have access to it.
