Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs Chooses Google Cloud as Primary AI Compute Provider

In a significant move for the AI industry, Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs has selected Google Cloud as its primary compute provider for training advanced AI models. This multi-million dollar partnership highlights the growing competition among cloud providers to secure high-profile AI startups as clients.

The Strategic Partnership

Announced at the Google Cloud Startup Summit, the deal will see World Labs allocate a substantial portion of its recent $230 million funding round to license GPU servers on Google Cloud Platform. The startup aims to develop cutting-edge “spatially intelligent” AI models capable of processing and interacting with video and geospatial data.

James Lee, General Manager of Startups and AI at Google Cloud, emphasized the technical rationale behind the selection: “Our AI-optimized infrastructure and ability to meet their scalability needs were decisive factors.”

Why Cloud Providers Covet AI Unicorns

The World Labs deal follows a growing trend of cloud providers vying for partnerships with well-funded AI startups:

  • OpenAI exclusively uses Microsoft Azure
  • Anthropic leverages both AWS and Google Cloud
  • These partnerships often represent multi-million dollar commitments

As AI models scale, their compute requirements grow exponentially, making these startups highly valuable long-term customers for cloud providers.

Google Cloud’s Competitive Edge

While acknowledging Li’s prior role as Google Cloud’s Chief Scientist of AI (2018), both companies maintain this didn’t influence the decision. Google highlighted several technical advantages:

  • High Performance Toolkit for scaling AI workloads
  • Diverse chip options (TPUs and Nvidia GPUs)
  • Proven infrastructure for large-scale AI training

“At this stage of their product roadmap, GPUs made more sense,” Lee noted, while leaving the door open for future TPU adoption.

The GPU Supply Challenge

Cloud providers face significant challenges in meeting GPU demand:

  • Global shortage of Nvidia GPUs
  • Google actively promoting TPUs as alternative
  • Microsoft reportedly struggling to meet OpenAI’s demands

Google recently promised startup Magic a cluster with “tens of thousands of Blackwell GPUs,” illustrating the massive resources required for modern AI training.

What’s Next for World Labs

The non-exclusive nature of the deal leaves room for future partnerships with other cloud providers. However, Google Cloud currently hosts the majority of World Labs’ workloads and aims to maintain this position as the startup scales its ambitious AI projects.
