Fotopedia to Cease Operations on August 10
Six years after its launch by former Apple executive Jean-Marie Hullot, Fotopedia – the innovative platform that reimagined digital photo storytelling – will officially shut down its apps and website on August 10, 2014. All user photos and data will be permanently deleted from their servers.
From Vision to Reality: Fotopedia’s Journey
Founded in 2008, Fotopedia initially aimed to:
- Bring the coffee table book experience to iPad and iPhone
- Create immersive travel-focused apps
- Partner with major brands like Expedia for monetization
By 2012, the platform had achieved:
- Over 3 billion image views
- 20 million downloads worldwide
- Winner of “Best Tablet App” at the 2011 Crunchies
Why Fotopedia Failed to Sustain
Despite its early success, Fotopedia faced critical challenges:
Monetization Struggles
- Transitioned from paid apps to ad-based model
- Global user base didn’t align with localized advertising markets
- Declining ad rates across the industry
Market Positioning
- While popular, never reached Instagram/Twitter scale
- “The concept of storytelling doesn’t have a suitable business model yet” - Company Statement
Product Evolution
- Launched country-specific “magazine” apps
- Introduced Fotopedia Reporter for user curation in 2013
Funding and Investors
According to CrunchBase, Fotopedia raised $12.7 million from notable investors including:
- Ron Conway (SV Angel)
- SoftTech VC
- Ignition Partners
- Joi Ito (Creative Commons founder)
What’s Next for the Team?
CEO Jean-Marie Hullot stated he plans to take a break before considering future ventures. The shutdown marks the end of an ambitious attempt to revolutionize digital photo storytelling – a vision that may have been ahead of its time.
