Months after initial reports, multiple Indian government websites continue to host malicious links that redirect users to fraudulent betting and investment platforms. This ongoing security lapse puts unsuspecting internet users at risk of falling victim to online scams.
The Scope of the Problem
TechCrunch investigators recently discovered:
- 90+ compromised links across official “.gov.in” domains
- Affected organizations include:
- Indian Council of Agricultural Research
- India Post
- State governments of Haryana and Maharashtra
- Various regional councils
- Search engines like Google have indexed these malicious links, increasing exposure
A Persistent Security Issue
This isn’t the first occurrence of such vulnerabilities:
- May 2024: TechCrunch reported ~50 affected government links
- CERT-In (India’s cyber agency) was alerted at the time
- The root cause appears unresolved, allowing scammers to continue exploitation
Security experts like Deedy Das of Menlo Ventures have recently highlighted the resurfacing of this issue on social media platforms.
Why This Keeps Happening
According to security researcher Bob Diachenko:
“The recurring problem suggests either:
- Compromised content management systems (CMS)
- Vulnerable server configurations
Simply removing malicious content without fixing underlying vulnerabilities allows attackers to regain access.”
Diachenko notes that while implementing proper fixes requires some downtime and effort, the solutions aren’t technically complex.
