Understanding Migraines: More Than Just a Headache

Migraines are far more than severe headaches—they’re a complex neurological condition often accompanied by distinct phases. These include prodromes (early warning signs like mood changes or fatigue) and postdromes (lingering “migraine hangovers” that leave patients exhausted). For the 1 billion people worldwide who experience migraines, tracking these patterns could be key to better management.

The Challenge of Migraine Tracking

As a migraine sufferer myself (experiencing attacks monthly), I recognize the value of prodrome patterns for early intervention. However, documenting symptoms is notoriously difficult—especially during postdrome phases when cognitive function is impaired. Traditional methods like calendar notes often fail when patients are too fatigued to record details accurately.

Introducing Migraine Buddy: A Digital Solution

Singapore-based healthtech company Healint has developed Migraine Buddy, an innovative mobile platform designed to:

  • Help patients comprehensively track migraine episodes
  • Provide doctors with actionable data during consultations
  • Automatically collect movement and sleep data via smartphone sensors (a key differentiator from other trackers)

Migraine Buddy Interface

How Migraine Buddy Works

The app features:

  1. Intuitive Wizard Interface: Guides users through recording:

    • Pre-migraine activities
    • Specific symptoms
    • Treatment effectiveness
    • Pain location patterns
  2. Automated Data Collection: Uses smartphone sensors to track:

    • Sleep patterns
    • Physical activity
    • Environmental factors
  3. Secure Cloud Sync: Ensures data preservation even if devices are lost

  4. Comprehensive Reports: Helps identify:

    • Personal migraine triggers
    • Most effective treatments
    • Attack frequency patterns

The Doctor-Patient Connection

Veronica Chew, Healint’s CMO and co-founder, explains the app’s origins:

“Neurologists consistently reported migraine patients struggling to recall attack details—frequency, triggers, or treatment responses. This data gap inspired our solution.”

Originally developing stroke detection technology, Healint pivoted to migraines after recognizing:

  • Higher smartphone adoption among migraine patients
  • Greater potential for large-scale data collection
  • Significant unmet need in migraine management

Availability and Future Developments

Currently Android-only, Healint plans to launch:

  • iOS version
  • Lite edition (no physician code required)

Expected release: End of 2014
