Portrait mode-style bokeh camera features have primarily been the domain of high-end smartphones so far. This is partly due to device manufacturers relying on a dual-camera system to create this effect, which drives up prices.
However, Samsung appears ready to change that soon with its announcement of a plan to bring its version of bokeh technology to mid-range and entry-level handsets. The company has not divulged specifics about specific models or timelines for implementation yet.
It is expected that Samsung’s own many mid-level devices will be the first to receive this feature, but given the company’s position as a component maker for so many different manufacturers, it is likely that the feature will also arrive on third-party phones.
While Sony still leads in camera image sensors, Samsung has made significant strides in this area as well. The enhanced title herecompany’s implementation of the technology is one of the more compelling among flagship smartphones. Introduced with the Galaxy Note 8, it offers a more customizable depth-of-field effect than many compe*****s.
Given that this deal involves both proprietary image sensors and software algorithms, it means that the full package will be arriving on any devices that choose to implement it. The package also includes improved low light shooting capabilities, courtesy of a pair of eight-megapixel sensors.
