Stellantis Drops Amazon Partnership, Adopts Google Android for In-Car Systems
Three years after announcing a high-profile collaboration with Amazon to develop connected car software, Stellantis has ended the partnership and will instead implement Google’s Android-based system in its vehicles.
The Failed Amazon Partnership
In 2022, Stellantis teamed up with Amazon to create advanced in-car software as part of its strategy to generate $22.5 billion annually from software services by 2030. The ambitious plan aimed to bring e-commerce, personalized experiences, and subscription services to 34 million connected Stellantis vehicles.
However, the partnership never materialized as envisioned. According to a Reuters report, Amazon has reassigned staff from the project, signaling its effective termination.
The Shift to Google Android
Stellantis confirmed the change in strategy, stating:
“Amazon remains a valuable partner for Stellantis, and the companies continue to work together on a range of initiatives.”
The automaker will maintain its relationship with Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its preferred cloud provider and continue offering Alexa voice assistance in its vehicles. However, the core infotainment system will now be Android-based.
Stellantis’ Broader Software Strategy
The company’s software vision, announced in December 2021, involves three key components:
- STLA Brain: The underlying electrical and software architecture
- STLA SmartCockpit: The platform for driver-facing applications (now Android-based)
- AutoDrive: The automated driving platform developed with BMW
While the Amazon partnership focused on the SmartCockpit’s personalization features, Stellantis will now leverage Google’s automotive-grade Android system, which powers infotainment systems for many major automakers.
What This Means for Drivers
The transition to Android suggests Stellantis vehicles will likely feature:
- Familiar Android Auto interface
- Seamless smartphone integration
- Access to Google’s app ecosystem
- Continued availability of Alexa for voice commands
This strategic pivot reflects the challenges automakers face in developing bespoke software solutions and the growing dominance of established tech platforms in the automotive space.
