Valve Launches Steam Direct on June 13, Phasing Out Greenlight

A major shift is coming to Valve’s PC gaming platform as Steam Direct officially launches on June 13, replacing the aging Steam Greenlight system. This change marks a new era for game developers seeking to publish on the world’s largest PC gaming marketplace.

Key Changes to Steam’s Submission Process

  • $100 per-game fee: Developers can now publish titles by meeting basic legal/content guidelines and paying a flat fee
  • Greenlight submissions/voting disabled immediately: Valve is reviewing remaining unapproved games for a final Greenlight batch
  • Full transition to Direct: Greenlight’s community voting system will be retired after 5 years of operation

Why Valve Is Making the Switch

In an official blog post, Steam engineer Alden Knoll explained:

“Steam Greenlight launched when we realized we couldn’t predict which titles players wanted. While it solved some problems, it introduced new challenges around discoverability and developer costs.”

The move reflects Valve’s evolving philosophy:

  1. Reduced gatekeeping: Instead of curating content, Valve wants consumers to decide what succeeds
  2. Improved discoverability: New algorithms will personalize store pages to show relevant games
  3. Streamlined publishing: The $100 fee replaces Greenlight’s unpredictable voting process

The End of an Era for Steam Greenlight

Launched in August 2012, Greenlight was Valve’s solution to:

  • Expand Steam’s game library beyond hand-picked titles
  • Give players input on which games should be published
  • Address criticism about missing popular indie games

However, the system became problematic as:

  • Developers spent significant resources campaigning for votes
  • Many quality games struggled to gain visibility
  • The Steam audience rarely participated in voting

What This Means for Game Developers

The new Steam Direct system offers:

More predictable publishing path (clear $100 fee vs. uncertain voting) ✅ Faster time-to-market (no waiting for community approval) ✅ Equal opportunity for all developers meeting basic requirements

Valve acknowledges this approach may create new challenges around discoverability in an increasingly crowded marketplace, but believes consumer choice should ultimately determine success rather than internal curation.

For developers with games still in Greenlight limbo, Valve promises to review remaining submissions before the June 13 transition.
