According to a study conducted by Cardiogram, an AI-powered heart health platform, the Apple Watch can detect diabetes in those previously diagnosed with the disease with an accuracy of up to 85%. This groundbreaking research is part of the larger DeepHeart study, which used data from 14,000 Apple Watch users and successfully identified 462 individuals with diabetes using the device’s heart rate sensor. The watch uses the same type of sensor as fitness bands with Android Wear.
The results build on previous studies by Ballinger and his colleagues that demonstrated the Apple Watch’s capability to detect abnormal heart rhythms, sleep apnea, and hypertension with up to 97%, 90, and 82 percent accuracy respectively. The watch also identified an irregular heartbeat in a patient with atrial fibrillation.
Prescription-free diagnostic technology for diabetes detection could be revolutionary as over 100 million U.S. adults currently live with pre-diabetes or full-blown diabetes, according to the CDC. Early detection through such devices can help control and cut down on related complications before they escalate.
The study’s researchers also emphasize that while this is a significant development in non-invasive diagnostics, it should not replace regular blood glucose tests for individuals who suspect they have diabetes. Patients are advised to consult their doctors for proper diagnosis and treatment.
