French AI Startup Bioptimus Raises $41M for Groundbreaking Biology Model

Paris-based AI startup Bioptimus has secured $41 million in funding to develop a foundational AI model specifically designed for biological applications. This ambitious project aims to create what CEO Jean-Philippe Vert describes as “the GPT of biology” โ€” an AI system capable of simulating biological processes rather than generating text.

The Vision: AI-Powered Biological Simulation

Bioptimus plans to train its model on comprehensive biological data spanning from molecular to organism-level information. This approach could revolutionize how scientists:

  • Predict disease outcomes
  • Accelerate drug discovery
  • Develop more effective treatments
  • Understand complex biological systems

“Instead of generating text, we’re simulating biology,” Vert explained in a company statement. The technology could transform research across pharmaceuticals, biotech, and even cosmetics.

France’s Thriving AI Ecosystem

Bioptimus joins a growing roster of well-funded French AI startups, including:

  • Mistral AI ($640M raised)
  • H ($220M seed round)
  • Hugging Face ($235M investment)

The company itself has now raised $76 million total since its founding last year โ€” a testament to both the AI boom and its impressive founding team, which includes former senior researchers from Amazon and Google.

Unique Data Advantage

Bioptimus benefits from its connection to Owkin, a French AI biotech unicorn where Vert serves as Chief R&D Officer. This relationship provides access to:

  • Vast multimodal patient data
  • Established biopharma partnerships
  • Proprietary research infrastructure

The company recently launched H-Optimus-0, an open-source foundation model for pathology research trained on millions of medical images to aid in disease diagnosis.

Future Roadmap

With fresh funding, Bioptimus plans to:

  1. Expand data sources across therapeutic areas
  2. Develop a comprehensive multi-modal foundation model
  3. Forge new pharmaceutical and biotech partnerships
  4. Release a new biological spectrum model in 2025

“This model will unlock limitless possibilities across many industries,” Vert predicts. The funding round was led by Cathay Innovation with participation from Sofinnova Partners, Bpifrance, and other prominent investors.
