FingerprintJS Secures $4M to Combat Online Fraud with Browser Fingerprinting Tech
Chicago-based entrepreneur Dan Pinto has successfully raised $4 million to commercialize FingerprintJS, an innovative browser fingerprinting technology designed to tackle one of the web’s most persistent challenges: fraud prevention. The startup, launched in January 2020, builds upon a popular open-source project with over 5 million downloads and 8,000 active websites.
What Makes FingerprintJS Unique?
FingerprintJS leverages advanced techniques like:
- Canvas fingerprinting
- Audio sampling
- WebGL fingerprinting
- Font detection
- Browser plugin probing
Unlike traditional methods, it generates a unique browser identifier without cookies, allowing companies to track user behavior while maintaining privacy compliance.
From Open-Source to Commercial Success
The technology originated five years ago as an open-source project by Valentin Vasilyev, who later collaborated with Pinto after working together at Machinio (sold in 2018). The duo officially launched FingerprintJS as a business in early 2020.
“The open-source community was pivotal to our success thus far,” said Vasilyev. “We’ll continue selling to developers first—they recognize our product’s effectiveness in stopping fraud.”

The $4M funding round was led by Nexus Venture Partners, with participation from:

- Entrepreneur Roundtable Accelerator’s Remarkable Ventures
- Angel investors including Rony Kahan (Co-founder of Indeed)

While GDPR and browser restrictions (Chrome/Firefox/Safari) pose hurdles, CEO Dan Pinto remains confident:
“We’re disrupting fraud prevention like Stripe did for payments. Instead of scoring visitors, we uniquely identify malicious users—solving the root problem.”
