Pollen’s Transparency Claims Clash with Controversial Severance Practices

Pollen, the U.K.-based travel and events marketplace, has built its brand on principles of “freedom” and openness—even publishing employee salaries publicly. Yet recent layoffs reveal a stark contrast in how the company handles departing staff.

The NDA Controversy

Last month, Pollen laid off 69 employees across its U.S. and Canadian operations. Former staff report being pressured to sign severance agreements containing:

  • A confidentiality clause prohibiting discussion of the agreement’s terms—even with current or former colleagues.
  • A non-disparagement clause restricting negative comments about the company or its leadership.

“It was an NDA masked as a severance agreement,” said one anonymous former employee. “They withheld final paychecks to coerce signatures and cut off all access within 24 hours.”

Leadership’s Response

CEO Callum Negus-Fancey confirmed the clauses exist but defended them as “standard,” citing external legal counsel. He added that Pollen may reconsider their use given the company’s transparency ethos.

However, HR experts dispute this claim:

“These clauses are atypical for routine redundancies,” noted a U.S. tech HR veteran. “They’re usually reserved for dispute resolutions or PR-sensitive exits.”

Broader Backlash and COVID-19 Fallout

The controversy follows earlier scrutiny of Pollen’s subsidiary, JusCollege, which faced backlash for refusing refunds on a spring break trip to Mexico despite pandemic concerns. Dozens of attendees later tested positive for COVID-19.

Negus-Fancey argued Pollen couldn’t unilaterally cancel trips without government advisories and emphasized its role as a middleman:

“We refunded all recoverable costs or offered future credits. We absorbed losses to prioritize customer trust.”

Ongoing Workforce Challenges

Pollen has since furloughed 56 more employees (45 in the U.S., 7 in the U.K., 4 in Canada) as travel demand plummets. Furloughed staff retain medical coverage and government support.

Investor Backing and Business Model

Founded in 2014 (originally as Verve), Pollen connects influencers and groups with curated experiences. Its backers include Northzone and Draper Esprit, leveraging word-of-mouth marketing to sell tickets.

Key Takeaways:

  • Pollen’s severance terms conflict with its transparency branding.
  • Legal experts question the necessity of such clauses in layoffs.
  • The company continues navigating pandemic-related travel disruptions.
