Travis VanderZanden, a former Uber and Lyft executive, has recently launched his newest company, Bird. Based in Santa Monica, California, Bird has quietly launched roughly 1,000 ‘Birds’ on the streets of the city, with over 50,000 rides taken by passengers.
However, Bird faces some legal issues and complications in different cities where it is present. In Santa Monica, for instance, local police officers have issued 97 citations involving Bird scooters in the first six weeks, while the city’s fire department has responded to eight related accidents, including minors and adults.
Despite these initial challenges, VanderZanden sees the potential benefits of electric scooters in reducing greenhouse gases generated by cars and trucks. He believes that if all companies in this space are successful, it will be a positive outcome.
Investors have shown confidence in Bird, as the company recently closed a $15 million Series A funding round, including investments from Tusk Ventures, Valor, Lead Edge Capital, and Goldcrest Capital. Craft Ventures, the new venture fund co-founded by serial entrepreneur David Sacks, led this round of funding.
