Booktrack Raises $2M to Bring Immersive Soundtracks to E-Books
New Zealand-based startup Booktrack, which specializes in enhancing e-books with synchronized soundtracks, has successfully closed a $2 million Series B funding round. The investment was led by Peter Thiel’s Valar Ventures, alongside contributions from Park Road Post Production, Weta Digital GM Tom Greally, Sparkbox Ventures, and other notable investors, including the New Zealand Venture Investment Fund and Stephen Tindall’s K One W One.
A New Era for Digital Reading
Booktrack’s innovative approach integrates background music and sound effects into e-books, creating a more immersive and engaging reading experience. Founder Paul Cameron likens the concept to “adding a soundtrack to a movie”—except for literature. Early adoption metrics are promising: 27% of users who download a free sample end up purchasing the full book, and 40% of those downloads are read cover-to-cover.
Collaborations and Expansion
The company has already partnered with high-profile authors and publishers, including James Frey, Salman Rushdie, and even released a soundtracked version of the Bible. Major publishing houses like Random House and HarperCollins have also joined the initiative, signaling strong industry interest.
To scale its impact, Booktrack is focusing on:
- Expanding its catalog of soundtrack-enabled titles.
- Broadening distribution to major e-book platforms, including Amazon Kindle (via ePub compatibility).
- Launching a self-serve platform to empower authors and publishers to create their own soundtracks.
The Road Ahead
Currently, Booktrack relies on Park Road Post Production—founded by filmmaker Peter Jackson—for audio processing. However, the new funding will accelerate the development of user-friendly tools for independent creators. The goal? To democratize the process and make soundtracked e-books accessible to a global audience.
