FireDome’s Artillery-Style System Deploys Fire Retardants to Combat Wildfires

A Military-Inspired Approach to Wildfire Defense

Wildfire containment has long mirrored military strategy—with ground crews as infantry, smokejumpers as paratroopers, and airtankers providing aerial support. Now, FireDome introduces what CEO Gadi Benjamini calls “artillery support” for firefighting operations.

“It’s a dynamic battlefield,” explains Benjamini, a veteran of Israeli military intelligence. “Our system brings precision strike capability to wildfire prevention.”

How FireDome’s Technology Works

The system draws direct inspiration from Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense with two key components:

  • AI-Powered Detection: Cameras and computer vision monitor for embers and small ignitions
  • Precision Launchers: Deploy 12-gallon biodegradable capsules filled with fire retardant

Key Capabilities:

  • Creates protective barriers around high-value assets (vineyards, resorts, neighborhoods)
  • Extinguishes small fires before they escalate
  • Current range: 0.25 miles (covering 50-100 acres)
  • Future versions will reach 1-mile radius (several hundred acres)

Target Markets and Implementation

Priority Applications:

  1. California Vineyards: High-value crops often deprioritized by firefighting resources
  2. Insurance Sector: Potential to reduce wildfire risks and lower premiums

Benjamini recounts visiting Napa Valley vineyards: “They told me during major fires, no one came to protect them—firefighters must prioritize human lives first.”

Funding and Deployment Timeline

The startup recently emerged from stealth with:

  • $3 million pre-seed funding led by Third Sphere and Gravity Climate
  • Additional backing from Atooro Fund, Caesar Fund, and Vertex Ventures

First operational deployments are planned for the 2025-2026 fire season, with sensor-embedded capsules designed for partial reuse after cleanup.

The Future of Precision Firefighting

This innovation represents a paradigm shift—applying military-grade tracking and targeting technology to create proactive wildfire defenses. As climate change intensifies fire seasons globally, such systems may become critical infrastructure for at-risk communities and industries.
