From TechCrunch to GV: A Journalist’s Journey Into Venture Capital
After five transformative years at TechCrunch, I’m embarking on an exciting new chapter as an Operating Partner at Google Ventures (GV). This decision wasn’t made lightly, but the opportunity to innovate within venture capital while continuing to amplify founder stories proved irresistible.
Why GV? The Allure of Building Something New
What excites me most about this transition? The chance to pioneer initiatives never before attempted within a VC firm. While details remain under wraps for now, GV’s visionary approach under leaders like Bill Maris and David Krane aligns perfectly with my passion for empowering entrepreneurs. Stay tuned for updates later this summer as I settle into this groundbreaking role.
GV’s Unique Approach to Venture Investing
Having covered GV extensively during my TechCrunch tenure, I’ve witnessed firsthand their innovative strategies for:
- Supporting founders in building billion-dollar companies
- Combining traditional VC with cutting-edge operational support
- Creating an ecosystem where startups thrive
It’s worth noting that GV’s Mountain View and South Park offices already feel familiar, with former TechCrunch colleagues like MG Siegler and Laura Boychenko now part of the team.
My TechCrunch Odyssey: From Intern to Industry Insider
My journey began with a bold (if naive) cold email to Michael Arrington offering to work for free as an intern. Thankfully, then-CEO Heather Harde responded with something better: a paid position starting January 2009.
That first day at Arrington’s Atherton home, greeted by his chocolate lab Laguna, marked the beginning of:
- Unparalleled professional growth in tech journalism
- Lifelong friendships with brilliant colleagues
- The privilege of breaking major industry news
- Countless interviews with visionary founders and investors
Lessons From the TechCrunch Trenches
The experience taught me what truly matters in a career:
- Impact: Shaping narratives around groundbreaking startups
- Access: Engaging with tech’s most influential minds
- Authenticity: Telling founder stories with integrity and insight
I’m confident the current editorial team, led by Alexia Tsotsis and Matthew Panzarino, will continue TechCrunch’s legacy of exceptional tech journalism.
Gratitude and Looking Forward
Special thanks to:
- Michael Arrington, Heather Harde, and Erick Schonfeld for taking a chance on me
- Eric Eldon, Alexia, and Matthew for their mentorship
- The TechCrunch community for being my sounding board and inspiration
To the entrepreneurs and readers who challenged and supported me: you’ve made me a better journalist and helped me discover my true calling—amplifying innovation through storytelling.
