Spanish startup Lizcore is tackling two critical challenges in indoor climbing: performance tracking and safety innovation. After catching attention at MWC earlier this year, the Barcelona-based company has now secured €600,000 (~$630,000) in pre-seed funding to bring its vision to life.
The Lizcore System: NFC Meets Climbing Tech
Lizcore’s innovative approach centers around:
- Lightweight NFC bracelets that climbers wear to track routes
- Smart base units installed at climbing stations
- AI-powered cameras for safety monitoring
- Mobile app integration for performance analytics
“Our system eliminates the need for bulky devices,” explains CEO Edgar Casanovas Lorente, a climbing instructor turned entrepreneur. “Climbers simply wear the bracelet while our hardware captures their progress.”
From Tracking to Safety: The Startup’s Evolution
While route tracking remains core to Lizcore’s offering, the team has sharpened its focus on autobelay safety - a critical concern in climbing gyms worldwide.

Autobelays allow solo climbing but present risks:
- Climbers forgetting to clip in
- Improper harness attachment
- Lack of consistent credential checks
“Tragic accidents happen when safety protocols fail,” notes CTO Marçal Juan. “We’re building technology to prevent these incidents.”
Lizcore’s Safety Innovation
The startup is developing a multi-layered safety system:
- Digital Credentialing: NFC bracelets store climbing certifications
- Smart Locking: Autobelays only release when proper credentials are verified
- AI Monitoring: Cameras detect proper clipping and climbing posture
- Alarm Systems: Instant alerts when potential dangers are identified
“We’re not promising 100% accuracy,” Juan clarifies, “but we’re creating multiple safety layers that significantly reduce risk.”
Funding and Future Plans
The €600,000 investment round includes:
- Startup Wise Guys
- Industry angels and backers
- €200,000 interest-free government loan
With the funding, Lizcore plans to:
- Expand its team from 2 to 9 members
- Finalize autobelay safety prototypes (ETA: 6-12 months)
- Address current hardware reliability challenges
- Onboard more climbing gyms following their first customer, Drac de Pedra in Rubí
“The demand from gyms is clear - safety is the priority,” Juan emphasizes. “While gamification enhances the climbing experience, preventing accidents is our most important mission.”
