This Spring, Walmart and Hudson’s Bay-owned department store Lord & Taylor are set to launch a unique partnership that will see the latter selling its high-end fashion merchandise through a dedicated “flagship store” on Walmart.com.
For Walmart, this collaboration is an opportunity to attract customers looking for luxury goods that may not have considered shopping on their website previously. In turn, Lord & Taylor aims to increase its customer base and benefit from the increased exposure on Walmart’s platform.
The announcement comes amidst a push by both retailers to expand into e-commerce sales of high-end fashion items, which until now has been notoriously difficult to sell online. Amazon, for example, has recently launched Prime Wardrobe - an initiative that allows customers to rent clothing and return it at no extra charge.
This digital store within a store approach is expected to appeal to other department stores struggling with sales in the current market. It remains to be seen if this partnership between Walmart and Lord & Taylor will set a precedent for similar collaborations among retailers in the future.
