Boston Dynamics, the robotics company known for its innovative products like the BigDog and Atlas humanoid robots, has released a new version of its popular SpotMini robot. This updated version features a sleeker design and enhanced capabilities, which could signal an increased focus on commercial applications.
The 24-second teaser trailer showcases the SpotMini robot performing a familiar task - dressage - across a freshly mowed lawn. The underlying hardware appears mostly unchanged from previous iterations of the company’s first all-electric quadrupedal bot, but the exterior has been given a dramatic makeover.
The new SpotMini features a polished finish and a Uma Thurman-inspired design reminiscent of her outfit in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Kill Bill.’ The video also reveals what appear to be Kinect-style 3D cameras mounted on top, which could indicate more autonomous capabilities for the robot.
In addition, Boston Dynamics has recently posted a listing for a ‘Senior Perception Software Engineer’ with experience in stereo cameras and LIDAR. This may hint at future developments in autonomous robots from the company.
