The iPhone X’s Face ID technology has recently been called into question by a Vietnamese research team, Bkav. The group claims to have cracked Apple’s facial recognition system using a replica face mask that combines printed 2D images with three-dimensional features. Bkav published a video demonstrating its proof of concept, but the validity of this hack remains questionable.
Apple appears skeptical of the purported hack and has not yet responded to inquiries. There are at least a few ways the video could have been faked, including training Face ID on the mask itself before presenting it with the actual face likeness. It’s worth noting that in a normal use case, the iPhone X would lock after five failed attempts to log in using Face ID.
Bkav’s method claims to use both 2D images and masks, tactics that Apple seems confident that Face ID can defend against. The research team admits this openly, stating that potential targets shall not be regular users, but billionaires, leaders of major corporations, nation leaders, and agents like FBI need to understand the Face ID’s issue.
