Cameras have long been a part of autonomous vehicle technology, aiding in reading street signs and traffic light colors. However, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) systems are crucial for sensing and evading obstacles in the road. Luminar Technologies Inc., a startup company, has developed a high-resolution LiDAR sensor that offers cars enhanced ability to see objects ahead and at greater distances than any other system currently on the market.

Pixel-wise precision and operational capabilities even in adverse weather conditions set Luminar’s LiDAR sensors apart from compe*****s like Quanergy, Velodyne, and Alphabet-owned Waymo. The CEO and cofounder of Luminar, Austin Russell, is confident that their technology surpasses those of other manufacturers.

At the age of twenty-two, Russell had already memorized the periodic tables, written his first patent at twelve, and dropped out of Stanford with a $100,000 Thiel Fellowship. His role models included famous physicists and engineers such as Newton, Tesla, and Einstein. These individuals were known for their innovative approaches to problem-solving that led to substantial advancements in respective fields.

Rather than simply improving upon existing tech or producing cheaper versions of LiDAR systems, Luminar aimed to develop a more advanced sensor capable of higher performance. To achieve this goal, they utilized exotic materials and operated at different wavelengths compared to industry standards. The result is a more expensive but highly effective LiDAR system.

During a demonstration at San Francisco’s Pier 35, employees arranged mannequins dressed in various colors and clothing, as well as life-sized decoy deer, car tires, and signs indicating distance every 25 meters or so. Luminar’s LiDAR sensors clearly displayed bicyclists weaving in and out of the road, a small pigeon scurrying ahead, and even detected a moving vehicle on the pier.

In comparison, other LiDAR systems could only show dots or lines representing objects ahead. They struggled to detect dark walls and mannequins dressed in darker clothing. Earlier LiDAR sensors were also limited to displaying what was happening within about a 35-to-50-meter range. Luminar’s LiDAR sensors, on the other hand, can detect obstacles at a distance of up to 200 meters while driving at speeds of approximately 75 miles per hour.

Rebecca Lynn, an investor with Canvas Ventures and partner at Canvas VC, believes that as Luminar begins marketing its systems, it will become a major strategic player in the automotive industry. Indeed, car manufacturers have offered to purchase all of Luminar’s planned production run, which is scheduled to begin this year. To meet demand, Luminar has also invested in building a 50,000 square foot factory in Orlando, Florida.

While some argue that self-driving vehicles can operate effectively using only cameras for perception, Lynn argues that LiDAR will ultimately save more lives than any other technology currently being developed. She believes that autonomous driving is the most promising technology capable of saving lives, and LiDAR will be essential for achieving truly safe self-driving cars.
