How the Feature Works
The experimental tool, currently available on Mastodon’s Android app (with iOS coming soon), triggers a reminder when users attempt to reply to a stranger. Key aspects include:
- Contextual nudges: The alert may highlight details about the original poster, such as their expertise, to prevent condescending or redundant replies.
- Time-sensitive warnings: Users are notified if they’re replying to a post older than three months, reducing outdated or irrelevant responses.
- Dismissible prompts: Options like “Got it” or “Don’t remind me again” allow users to bypass the warning if desired.

Mastodon CEO Eugen Rochko explained that subtle prompts can significantly alter user behavior. This approach mirrors Twitter’s (now X) pre-Musk strategies, such as:
- Asking users to read articles before retweeting.
- Encouraging sharing tweets instead of screenshotting.
- Prompting revisions of harmful replies.
Twitter’s data showed a 34% reduction in offensive replies after implementing similar nudges, with users composing 11% fewer harmful responses long-term. Mastodon hopes to replicate this success while maintaining its commitment to free expression.
