Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung have all been working hard to create their own standards to control connected devices in homes. In response, Mozilla has announced Project Things, an open framework aimed at creating a universal gateway for the Internet of Things (IoT). By doing so, they hope to avoid IoT becoming dominated by big tech companies.
Connected devices are great, but when they only work with specific ecosystems like Amazon Echo and Siri, it becomes problematic. With Project Things, Mozilla aims to create an open standard through their collaboration with the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) around the Web of Things. The specifications rely on JSON (JavaScript Object Notation), a RESTful API, and WebSockets API for data transfer, all of which are already widely used models in web development.
Poorly designed IoT standards can cost users more money and add unnecessary complexity to their lives. Mozilla hopes that by creating an open standard, manufacturers will be encouraged to develop their own gateways, such as Netgear routers with embedded Web of Things functionality. This would make it easier for people using other ecosystems like Apple’s HomeKit or Amazon’s Smart Home Skill API.
Mozilla is also working on a Web of Things Gateway that can replace devices from big tech companies. Developers can even create bridges between proprietary APIs, making it easier for users to control their IoT devices through open-source software.
Finally, Mozilla has designed an interface that allows users to add its progressive web app to their smartphone home screen and control their connected devices with voice commands or other actions. The company is also creating a plugin system so developers can easily support new devices and protocols by installing plugins. This would enable more app developers to create native apps for controlling homes using the Web of Things protocol.
Mozilla’s Project Things represents a significant effort in promoting open standards within IoT, providing consumers with greater choice and control over their connected devices. By avoiding expensive licensing fees associated with big tech companies, users can enjoy an improved experience when it comes to managing their smart home.
