Google has recently added an augmented reality (AR) mode to its Motion Stills video/gif editing app available for Android users. This new feature allows users to add 3D models from Poly onto surfaces inside their environment, and record gifs and videos within the app.
Unlike other AR features requiring support from ARCore, the Motion Stills app is compatible with a wide variety of Android phones running on version 5.1 or higher.
The AR mode in Motion Stills is powered by an instant motion tracking system that accurately tracks static and moving objects using technology similar to what powers Motion Text and privacy blur features in YouTube. This improved system enables fun AR experiences accessible to a wider range of Android devices.
Google introduced AR Stickers on the Pixel 2 in December, releasing Porgs and Stormtroopers into people’s homes as living advertisements. The latest update of Motion Stills aims to make these AR experiences available to more people and devices by refining and enhancing its motion tracking technology.
