Catastrophic Flooding Claims Hundreds of Lives

In what officials are calling the worst flooding in six decades, Nigeria’s central Niger State has reported over 200 confirmed deaths with approximately 500 still missing after devastating floods ravaged the town of Mokwa last Thursday.

Key Facts:

  • Rescue operations halted: Authorities believe no survivors remain in the flood zone
  • Unprecedented scale: Worst flooding in the region since 1964
  • Economic impact: Local businesses and infrastructure severely damaged
  • Public health concerns: Officials preparing to recover buried corpses to prevent disease

Survivors’ Harrowing Accounts

Residents described terrifying scenes as floodwaters swept through the Mokwa districts of Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa following torrential rains. Many lost family members, homes, and livelihoods in minutes.

Adamu Yusuf, a local resident, recounted: “I watched helplessly as water washed away my wife and newborn baby. I survived only because I could swim.”

Saliu Sulaiman, a local merchant, lost $1,500 in farm sale proceeds: “The water pressure was too strong - I couldn’t retrieve my savings.”

Ongoing Crisis Management

  • The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has begun distributing relief packages
  • The Nigerian Red Cross reports “significant loss of life and widespread distress”
  • Floodwaters carried bodies as far as Rabba, an hour’s drive from Mokwa
  • Critical infrastructure including roads and bridges damaged, disrupting local economy

Climate Context

Flooding during Nigeria’s rainy season (April-October) has become increasingly severe:

  • 2024: Deadly floods displaced thousands
  • 2022: 600+ deaths and 1.3 million displaced
