nOCD, a mobile app designed to help individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), has secured a $1 million seed round from early-stage healthcare investment firm 7wire Ventures. The free app guides patients through exposure and response prevention (ERP) exercises, a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that is particularly effective for OCD.
Founded by CEO Stephen Smith while he was a college student due to his own struggles with the condition, nOCD aims to provide specific treatment options as well as a supportive community. The app has already attracted 80,000 users since its launch in 2016.
According to the lifetime prevalence of OCD among American adults estimated by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), around 2.3% of Americans are affected by the condition. It is considered one of the most disabling conditions due to its impact on work and quality of life. Despite being effective, ERP therapy can be difficult to access and expensive.
nOCD was created with the intention of addressing these barriers. Users receive guidance outside of medical appointments, track their progress in the app, share that information with healthcare providers, and connect anonymously with other OCD sufferers for support. The startup also plans to develop a version for Android users and add more features based on user feedback.
With this new funding, nOCD has raised a total of $1.25 million, including angel investment. The app is currently available only on iOS, but it will use the new funding from the seed round to expand to Android as well as develop additional features for users.
While self-help mental health apps have become increasingly popular in recent years, nOCD might be a precursor of this trend, where startups create resources tailored specifically to individual conditions. With many individuals affected by specific mental health issues requiring specific treatment options, the future of mental healthcare may see more personalized and specialized apps like nOCD.
