How Nuon is Transforming SaaS Deployment with BYOC Technology

From PowerTools to Nuon: A Founder’s Journey

In 2019, Jon Morehouse launched PowerTools to help companies deploy static sites and serverless apps to their cloud accounts. However, when a customer asked about deploying software into their clients’ cloud accounts, Morehouse discovered an untapped market need. After consulting with other SaaS founders, he realized this was a common challenge—leading to the 2021 pivot that created Nuon.

What Nuon Offers: The BYOC Advantage

Nuon specializes in “bring your own cloud” (BYOC) infrastructure, enabling SaaS companies to:

  • Deploy applications directly into customer cloud accounts (AWS, Azure, etc.)
  • Maintain data isolation and deep integration while delivering a SaaS-like experience
  • Automate updates and server management without manual intervention

“It’s a hybrid of SaaS and self-hosted,” explains Morehouse, Nuon’s CEO. “The software runs in the customer’s environment, but vendors retain control over management.”

Why BYOC Matters for Modern SaaS Companies

Many enterprises demand software deployment within their own cloud environments due to:

  • Security and compliance requirements
  • Data residency concerns
  • Scalability challenges with manual deployments

Morehouse notes: “Companies that can’t meet this need risk losing enterprise clients—a make-or-break scenario for many startups.”

Nuon’s $16.5M Funding and Industry Validation

After operating in stealth since November 2023, Nuon announced a $16.5M funding round backed by:

  • Uncork Capital
  • M12 (Microsoft’s VC arm)
  • Mantis VC
  • Redpoint Ventures

James Wu of M12 compared BYOC’s potential to SOC 2 adoption, while Uncork’s Andy McLoughlin cited strong endorsements from industry leaders like Sourcegraph’s Quinn Slack.

The Competitive Edge for AI Startups

Nuon currently serves many early-stage AI companies leveraging BYOC to:

  • Differentiate from compe*****s
  • Accelerate enterprise adoption
  • Avoid building custom integrations

What’s Next for Nuon?

The company plans to:

  1. Exit beta by Q1 2025
  2. Expand hiring
  3. Launch Nuon Action for in-cloud debugging

“The next 17 years of software will be BYOC-first, especially for AI,” predicts Morehouse. “Nuon is building the infrastructure to power this shift.”
