Nuvemshop: The Shopify of Latin America Lands $30M in Funding
After nine years of relentless innovation, Nuvemshop—Latin America’s premier e-commerce platform—has successfully raised $30 million in venture capital to accelerate its expansion. The funding round was led by Qualcomm Ventures, with participation from Kaszek Ventures, FJ Labs, IGNIA, Elevar Equity, and angel investor Kevin Efrusy.
From Humble Beginnings to Regional Powerhouse
Founded in Buenos Aires by Santiago Sosa, Alejandro Vazquez, Martin Palombo, and Alejandro Alfonso, Nuvemshop began as a consulting firm before pivoting to solve a critical challenge: empowering small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to sell online. Today, the platform supports 65,000+ merchants across Latin America, processing over $100 million monthly in transactions.
Key Features:
- Multi-country presence: Operates as Nuvemshop in Brazil and Tiendanube in Spanish-speaking markets.
- All-in-one solutions: Offers billing, payment processing, logistics, and shipping integrations.
- Affordable pricing: Subscription plans start at $3/month, with scalable transaction fees.
Strategic Growth Plans
With this new capital, Nuvemshop aims to expand into Colombia and Peru by 2021 while focusing on three core initiatives:
- Payment & Logistics Gateway: Launching an integrated system to streamline shipping and reduce costs through bulk delivery solutions.
- App Marketplace: Providing merchants access to developer-built tools for enhanced functionality.
- Financial Services: Expanding beyond payment processing to include revenue-based lending.
Why Investors Are Betting on Nuvemshop
Alexandre Villela of Qualcomm Ventures highlighted the platform’s transformative potential:
“Nuvemshop accelerates digital transformation for SMBs through seamless, integrated solutions. We’re excited to support their engineering-driven scalability.”
CEO Santiago Sosa emphasized the platform’s role in countering dominant marketplaces like MercadoLibre and Amazon, which prioritize buyer optimization over seller profitability. “We offer a direct, low-fee alternative,” he noted.
The Future of E-Commerce in Latin America
Sosa predicts a seismic shift in retail:
“While others forecast e-commerce penetration rising to 20%, we believe 90% of retail will become tech-enabled within 15 years.”
This vision underscores Nuvemshop’s mission to democratize digital commerce for Latin America’s burgeoning SMB sector.
