Artificial intelligence (AI) is being leveraged by a startup called Paige.AI to enhance cancer pathology diagnosis. The company has closed $25 million in Series A funding and signed a deal with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer (MSK) to gain exclusive access to its 25 million pathology slides as well as MSK’s intellectual property related to computational pathology.
The startup is focused on using AI to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment. It plans to target major cancers such as breast, prostate, and others. Paige.AI aims to partner with other medical centers beyond MSK as well as commercial labs and pharmaceutical companies in its growth and development of applications.
The funding for Paige.AI is led by Jim Breyer of Breyer Capital. MSK received equity as part of the license deal, but MSK is not a cash investor. Breyer believes that Paige.AI has the potential to become a powerhouse in computational pathology and an undisputed leader among other healthcare AI compe*****s.
The co-founders of Paige.AI are Dr. Thomas Fuchs and Dr. David Klimstra, both of whom have significant experience in cancer research and AI development. They are keeping their existing roles at MSK while building out Paige.AI.
By using AI, Paige.AI aims to help pathologists diagnose diseases more accurately and efficiently. The company plans to train its AI platform on a large amount of data, with MSK providing 5 million digitized pathology slides. Paige.AI has committed to digitizing the remaining 20 million slides.
