At a recent event at Pepperdine University, Anduril founder Palmer Luckey delivered a provocative speech on national defense, autonomous weapons, and the role of technology in modern warfare. Dressed in his signature Hawaiian shirt and mullet, the billionaire entrepreneur didn’t hold back as he outlined his controversial perspectives.
The Need for a ‘Warrior Class’
Luckey argued that societies have always relied on a dedicated group willing to use force for noble causes.
“You need people like me who are sick in that way and who don’t lose any sleep making tools of violence in order to preserve freedom,” he told Pepperdine president Jim Gash.
His remarks underscored his belief in the necessity of a ‘warrior class’—individuals committed to leveraging violence for strategic and ethical objectives.
Anduril’s Role in Ukraine and AI-Powered Defense
Luckey recounted his early interactions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, revealing that Ukraine had expressed interest in Anduril’s border control technology as far back as 2019. However, U.S. State Department reluctance delayed collaboration until after Russia’s invasion.
“If we had provided real-time intelligence on Russia’s critical weapons systems earlier, it could have changed the course of the war,” Luckey claimed.
Anduril, now valued at $14 billion, eventually supplied advanced defense systems to Ukraine within weeks of the conflict’s onset. The company’s AI platform, Lattice, powers many of its autonomous solutions.
The Debate Over Autonomous Weapons
Luckey dismissed concerns about fully autonomous weapons—systems capable of making life-or-death decisions without human input—as a ploy by adversaries to stifle Western innovation.
“Where’s the moral high ground in a landmine that can’t distinguish between a school bus and a tank?” he challenged.
Despite controversy, including reservations from Anduril co-founder Trae Stephens, Luckey remains a staunch advocate for unfettered AI development in defense applications.
Anduril’s Future: IPO on the Horizon?
Hinting at long-term ambitions, Luckey suggested that going public might be inevitable for Anduril to compete for major defense contracts like the Joint Strike Fighter program.
“A privately traded company will never win a trillion-dollar defense effort—Congress won’t allow it,” he noted.
Ruling out acquisition as an option (citing his contentious exit from Facebook after Oculus’s sale), Luckey left the stage after declining a gift of The Lord of the Rings—the inspiration for Anduril’s name—with a quip about his motorcycle’s limited storage space.
