Private Companies Overconfident on Cybersecurity Despite Rising Threats
A new PwC report reveals a dangerous disconnect between private company optimism and their cybersecurity preparedness, leaving them vulnerable to growing digital threats.
Key Findings from PwC’s CEO Survey
- 86% of private company CEOs expressed confidence in their 2017 revenue growth prospects (up 5% from 2016)
- For the first time in five years, private company leaders showed greater confidence than public company CEOs
- Only 68% expressed concern about the pace of technological change
- Just 59% showed concern about cyber threats (compared to higher awareness at public companies)
The survey gathered responses from 781 private company CEOs across 79 countries, painting a concerning picture of cybersecurity complacency.
The Growing Cybersecurity Gap
Stephanie Hyde, PwC UK’s Global Entrepreneurial and Private Business Leader, highlighted the alarming findings:
“Private companies typically have fewer resources to invest in cybersecurity protections, yet our data shows they’re less concerned about digital threats than their public counterparts. This makes them prime targets for hackers who assume - often correctly - that their defenses will be weaker.”
