Shine Raises $2.5M to Democratize Mental Wellness via Text Messaging

In a world where access to mental health resources remains unequal, Brooklyn-based startup Shine is leveraging the power of text messaging to make well-being support more accessible. The company recently announced a $2.5 million funding round co-led by Betaworks and Eniac Ventures, with participation from Female Founders Fund, Felix Capital, Comcast Ventures, BBG Ventures, and The New York Times.

Why Text Messaging? The Power of 98% Open Rates

Co-founders Naomi Hirabayashi and Marah Lidey built Shine on a simple insight: SMS boasts a staggering 98% open rate. While skeptics may question prioritizing text in an era of social media dominance, Lidey emphasizes, “Function over feature is more important.”

Originally launched as an SMS-only service, Shine has since expanded to Facebook Messenger and Kik. Its AI-driven bot collects user inputs to deliver personalized well-being content—dubbed “intentions”—at optimal times during the day.

Standing Out in a Crowded Wellness Space

The mental wellness market is competitive, with established players like Headspace and Aura dominating the app space. However, Shine differentiates itself by:

  • Millennial-focused approach: Addressing digital overload with bite-sized, actionable content
  • Multi-platform accessibility: Meeting users where they already communicate
  • Personalization: Tailoring content to individual goals and schedules

Funding Fuels Product Expansion and Team Growth

Founded in 2016 with an undisclosed pre-seed round, Shine is now exploring monetization strategies while maintaining its free core service. The recent funding will support:

  • Team expansion beyond its current four employees
  • Development of new products, including a voice-based offering through Betaworks’ Voicecamp program
  • Enhanced personalization capabilities

The Future of Conversational Wellness

As Shine develops its voice product in collaboration with Betaworks’ Voicecamp accelerator, the company is positioning itself at the intersection of mental wellness and emerging communication technologies. This strategic move could redefine how digital natives access self-care tools in an increasingly voice-first world.
