Starbreeze Steps In to Publish System Shock 3 with $12M Investment
Fans of the groundbreaking System Shock series have reason to celebrate: Starbreeze Studios has announced a major $12 million investment to publish System Shock 3, the highly anticipated sequel to the iconic sci-fi RPG franchise. The game, currently in early development, will be released for PC and other platforms.
A Legacy Reborn
Originally released in 1994, System Shock pioneered the fusion of first-person shooter mechanics with deep RPG elements, influencing later classics like Deus Ex and BioShock. The third installment is being developed by Otherside Entertainment, led by Warren Spector, the original producer of System Shock.
“System Shock is one of those iconic franchises in the history of games that still gets my blood going,” said Bo Andersson-Klint, CEO of Starbreeze. “We’re greatly looking forward to bringing System Shock 3 to players worldwide in our collaboration with Otherside Entertainment. I’ll be first in line to play.”

Not to Be Confused with the Remake
This project is separate from Nightdive Studios’ System Shock remake, which raised $1.35 million via Kickstarter. While the remake modernizes the original, System Shock 3 aims to push the franchise forward with new storytelling and gameplay innovations.
Starbreeze’s Growing Portfolio
The Stockholm-based publisher is also behind other high-profile projects, including:
- Psychonauts 2 (coming 2018 to PS4, Xbox One, and PC)
- Dead by Daylight (survival horror hit released in 2016)
