Platforms Under Fire for Amplifying Violence
In the wake of the violent storming of the U.S. Capitol by pro-Trump extremists, prominent tech executives and industry leaders are urging Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to take stronger action against President Trump’s inflammatory posts. The riots have intensified scrutiny over social media’s role in enabling misinformation and inciting violence.

After Trump shared a video calling the rioters “very special” and urging them to disperse, both Facebook and Twitter removed the content. Twitter went further, locking Trump’s account for at least 12 hours and warning that future violations could result in a permanent ban.

Chris Sacca, an early Twitter investor, accused Dorsey and Zuckerberg of having “blood on their hands” for years of inaction.
Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian echoed these sentiments, reflecting on the long-term consequences: “There are a lot of hard questions we’re going to have to answer for our children.” Ohanian had previously stepped down from Reddit’s board in 2020 amid the Black Lives Matter protests.

Alex Stamos, Facebook’s former chief security officer, argued that labeling misleading content was insufficient. “They have to cut him off,” he stated, referring to Trump’s accounts.
Ellen Pao, former Reddit CEO, pointed to Dorsey’s inaction as a direct contributor to the crisis. In November, Pao and Laura Gómez had publicly urged Twitter to curb Trump’s influence, warning of potential violence.

Timnit Gebru, a former Google AI researcher, criticized YouTube for escaping accountability despite its role in amplifying hate speech globally.
“Platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter have been facilitating misinformation and hate speech in countries deemed ‘unimportant,’” she noted.
Platforms Respond to Emergency
Facebook’s VP of Integrity, Guy Rosen, confirmed the removal of Trump’s video, stating it “contributes to rather than diminishes the risk of ongoing violence.” The company also issued an official statement condemning the riots.
A Tipping Point for Social Media
With Inauguration Day approaching, platforms face mounting pressure to prevent further violence. Tech journalist Kara Swisher demanded immediate action, warning that failure to suspend Trump’s account would make platforms complicit.
