Verily’s Study Watch: A High-Tech Wearable Exclusively for Medical Research

Alphabet’s health-tech subsidiary Verily has unveiled its latest innovation: a smartwatch designed specifically for clinical research. Packed with advanced sensors, an always-on display, and an extended battery life, the Verily Study Watch aims to revolutionize data collection in longitudinal health studies.

Why This Smartwatch Isn’t for Sale

Unlike consumer wearables, the Study Watch is not available for purchase. Instead, it’s engineered to meet the rigorous demands of medical research.

“While numerous wearables exist in the market, we have a specific need outside of these offerings: namely, the scalable collection of rich and complex datasets across clinical and observational studies,” explained Verily’s technical lead David He, product manager Tushar Parlikar, and technical program manager Harry Xiao in a blog post.

Verily’s Vision and Backing

Formerly known as Google Life Sciences, Verily has secured $800 million in funding from Singapore’s investment firm Temasek earlier this year. The company has a track record of ambitious projects, including:

  • Smart contact lenses for glucose monitoring
  • Collaborations with GlaxoSmithKline, Sanofi, and the NIH

Who Will Use the Study Watch?

The device is already slated for use in high-profile medical studies:

  • Personalized Parkinson’s Project: A collaboration with Radboud University Medical Center and ParkinsonNet
  • Baseline Study: A wide-ranging health initiative with Duke University and Stanford Medicine

Technical Highlights

  • Always-On Display: Unlike early Apple Watches, the Study Watch shows time and study instructions continuously.
  • Encrypted Data: All collected data is encrypted on-device and remains secure during transmission to Verily’s servers.
  • Real-Time OS: Runs a lightweight operating system optimized for research.
  • Study Hub Integration: Pairs with a mobile app to upload data seamlessly.

How It Stacks Up Against Consumer Wearables

While always-on displays aren’t new (e.g., Samsung Gear S3, LG G Watch), the Study Watch distinguishes itself with clinical-grade precision and research-focused functionality.

The Bigger Picture

This launch underscores Verily’s commitment to precision medicine—leveraging technology to gather deeper insights into human health. Though consumers can’t buy it, the Study Watch could pave the way for future breakthroughs in wearable health tech.
