Why These Deep Tech VCs Are Choosing Collaboration Over Competition

Breaking the VC Mold: A New Approach to Deep Tech Investing

In the high-stakes world of venture capital, where cutthroat competition often reigns supreme, a group of Boston investors is flipping the script. Five venture capitalists from four different firms have launched Venx, a collaborative investment group focused exclusively on deep tech startups.

The Power of Partnership in Deep Tech

The founding members represent:

  • Anzu Partners
  • Hitachi Ventures
  • Myriad Venture Partners
  • SkyRiver Ventures

While each investor maintains autonomy over their funding decisions, Venx creates a structured framework for knowledge sharing, deal flow, and collective evaluation of opportunities.

“The need for partnerships in deep tech investments seemed obvious,” explains Hyuk-Jeen Suh, General Partner at SkyRiver Ventures and one of Venx’s architects. “Startups have long understood that collaboration drives innovation - now it’s time for VCs to embrace this model.”

Why Deep Tech Demands a Different Approach

Deep tech ventures face unique challenges that make collaboration particularly valuable:

  • Capital-intensive projects requiring significant funding
  • Specialized equipment and infrastructure needs
  • Complex, uncharted technological territory
  • Long development timelines before commercialization

“In deep tech, there’s more than enough opportunity to go around,” Suh notes. “Why compete over who funds the best carbon removal tech or cancer treatment when we could be working together to solve these massive challenges?”

The Venx Model: More Than Just a Syndicate

While similar to investment syndicates in some ways, Venx distinguishes itself through:

  1. Physical co-location with shared office space and meeting rooms
  2. Structured collaboration beyond ad hoc deal-sharing
  3. Diverse expertise across investment stages (pre-seed to late-stage) and sectors (climate tech, AI, biotech)
  4. Formalized processes for evaluating startups collectively

The Future of Collaborative Venture Capital

Venx currently operates as:

  • A shared workspace for partners
  • A collective pitch review forum
  • An expanding network open to new members (with a startup-focused investment mandate)

Looking ahead, the group could evolve into:

  • A larger partnership with more VC firms
  • A shared investment fund
  • A model replicated in other tech hubs worldwide

“This is more than just a space - it’s an experiment in changing how venture capital works,” says Suh. “When you’re tackling humanity’s biggest challenges, cooperation isn’t just nice - it’s necessary.”

Could Venx’s collaborative approach become the new standard for deep tech investing? Only time will tell, but their experiment is certainly one to watch.
