Recent tweets from Apple developers indicate that they have been receiving emails containing confidential data about other developers’ apps, including ad spend and install summaries, sent by Apple through its Pay-per-Install ads when people search on the App Store. This issue seems to affect only developers using the Search Ads Basic format.
Apple launched the Search Ads Basic in December 2017 as a pay-per-install ad format targeting smaller developers and those just getting started with app store advertising. Unlike the older Search Ads Advanced, which pays per tap on ads, the basic option only charges for installs and has limited parameters for targeting.
The confidential data disclosed includes how much money developers are spending on apps and downloads, information that could be shared inadvertently with compe*****s or exposed to third parties if not handled properly. Thus far, Apple’s Developer Tools seem unaffected by this issue.
Although it is unclear just how many developers are being affected by the email glitch or why it is happening, this incident may expose private data belonging to a significant number of businesses and developers using Apple’s App Store ad products.
In 2015, Apple had similar privacy issues when several developers logging into iTunes Connect portal found themselves presented with accounts and data from other users. The company also faced user account migration problems in China during iCloud migrations in recent years.
