The Apple Watch continues to be a driving force in the world of wearables, with sales figures for 2017 showing an impressive 54% jump over the previous year. According to new numbers from Canalys, a total of 18 million units were shipped in 2017, making the smartwatch one of the most popular wearables on the market.
LTE functionality was cited as the primary reason behind the Apple Watch’s success. The cellular connectivity feature allowed for wider distribution and made the device more appealing to consumers. The watch received particularly strong reception in countries like the US, Japan, Australia, and Canada. However, it faced some resistance in markets such as the UK, France, and Germany due to fewer carrier partnerships.
Despite making up only a fraction of total sales (13%), LTE-enabled Apple Watches were still the most sought after version of the device. Series 3 watches with cellular connectivity accounted for approximately one quarter of combined Series 1 and 2 shipments last year, as older models continue to be offered at discounted prices.
During the holiday season, sales figures surged by an impressive 32% when compared to Q4 2016. This strong performance was in line with Apple’s earnings report during its last conference call, where it was announced that the company had experienced its best quarter ever for the Apple Watch.
Despite being a latecomer to the cellular smartwatch market, Apple managed to outsell rivals such as Samsung. The popularity of LTE connectivity on wrist worn devices continues to grow, and the Apple Watch remains at the forefront of this trend.
