Eat Just Expands in China: Vegan Eggs Hit 500+ Dicos Locations
San Francisco-based food tech startup Eat Just is making strategic moves to capture China’s booming plant-based food market. The company, known for its innovative chicken-less egg products, has partnered with Dicos, a major Chinese fast-food chain rivaling McDonald’s and KFC, to introduce its mung bean-derived vegan eggs across 500+ locations.
Strategic Partnership with Dicos
Under this agreement, Eat Just’s plant-based eggs will feature prominently in Dicos’ breakfast menu, including:
- Breakfast burgers
- Bagel sandwiches
- Western-style breakfast plates
This collaboration expands Dicos’ existing plant-based offerings, which already include a vegan chicken burger from local startup Starfield. With 2,600 stores nationwide and 600 million annual customers, Dicos provides Eat Just access to both urban centers and lower-tier cities—key to mainstream adoption.
China: A Growing Market for Plant-Based Foods
Eat Just first entered China in 2019 and currently derives % of revenue from the region. However, the company projects China could eventually contribute over 50% of total revenue.
Key market insights:

- The “free from meat” market is projected to reach $12 billion by 2023 (Euromonitor)
- Year-over-year growth for Eat Just in China: 70%
“We’ve been intentional about starting small, hiring local experts, and finding the right manufacturing and distribution partners,” said Andrew Noyes, Eat Just’s Head of Global Communications.
Competitive Edge in China’s Plant-Based Race
While compe*****s like Beyond Meat focus on beef alternatives, Eat Just is carving a niche with egg substitutes. The company leverages:
- Mung beans: A familiar ingredient in Chinese cuisine
- Strategic retail partnerships: Already available via Alibaba and JD.com
- Proven investor backing: $300M+ raised from Bill Gates, Li Ka-shing, and others
“Plant-based foods are gaining popularity as China explores sustainable food solutions,” Noyes noted. “Our products complement the offerings of meat alternative companies.”
Future Growth Trajectory
The Dicos deal follows Eat Just’s October 2020 announcement to establish an Asia subsidiary. With $1.2B valuation and 160 employees (10 in China), the company is positioned for scalable growth in the world’s largest protein market.
