Cloud Gaming Expands to iOS: Stadia and GeForce Now Arrive as Web Apps

In a significant move for mobile gamers, both Nvidia’s GeForce Now and Google Stadia have announced iOS compatibility through progressive web apps—bypassing Apple’s App Store restrictions while delivering full cloud gaming experiences.

Nvidia GeForce Now: iOS Beta Now Live

Nvidia has launched a public beta of GeForce Now for iPhone and iPad users, accessible via play.geforcenow.com. This web-based approach allows iOS gamers to:

  • Stream purchased games from Steam, Epic, and Ubisoft Connect (with GOG support coming soon)
  • Play across devices including Windows, macOS, and Android
  • Use Bluetooth controllers (keyboard/mouse not supported)

Key Details:

  • Pricing: $5/month for Founders Edition (unlimited play), with a free tier offering 1-hour sessions
  • Library: 1,000+ opt-in titles from publishers
  • iOS Experience: Add to home screen for full-screen gameplay without Safari UI

Nvidia is collaborating with Epic Games to develop a touch-optimized Fortnite version, potentially reviving the game for iOS players post-App Store removal.

Google Stadia: iOS Testing Imminent

Google announced upcoming iOS testing for Stadia, marking its first web app phase. Unlike GeForce Now, Stadia operates as a closed ecosystem:

  • Requires game purchases exclusive to Stadia
  • Offers 100+ titles, including Stadia Pro subscription games
  • Plans to refine performance based on user feedback during rollout

Why This Matters

Both services circumvent Apple’s App Store policies by leveraging web technology, setting a precedent for cloud gaming on iOS. While GeForce Now focuses on existing game libraries, Stadia provides a console-like experience—giving gamers distinct options for mobile play.
