The Linux Foundation, a leading nonprofit championing open source adoption, has officially launched its India subsidiary—LF India—to strengthen collaboration and innovation within the country’s thriving tech ecosystem. This strategic move aims to empower Indian enterprises, startups, and government bodies to actively contribute to and lead open source projects.
Why India? A Hotbed for Open Source Growth
India boasts 13.2 million developers on GitHub, making it the world’s second-largest open source developer hub after the U.S. (Microsoft, 2024). Despite this, only 200,000 Indian developers currently contribute to Linux Foundation-hosted projects. LF India seeks to bridge this gap by fostering local talent and scaling participation.
