Microsoft Rebrands Bing Chat to Copilot in Major AI Shift

At Microsoft Ignite 2023, the tech giant announced a significant rebranding of its AI-powered chatbot services. The consumer-facing Bing Chat is now simply Copilot, while its enterprise counterpart, Bing Chat Enterprise, has also adopted the Copilot name. This move signals Microsoft’s effort to streamline its AI offerings under a unified brand identity.

Why the Rebranding?

Microsoft insists this change isn’t about causing confusion—despite the growing family of Copilot-branded products. According to Caitlin Roulston, Microsoft’s Director of Communications:

“Renaming ‘Bing Chat Enterprise’ to ‘Copilot’ reflects our vision to create a unified Copilot experience for consumer and commercial customers.”

Industry analysts speculate the rebrand may also reflect Microsoft’s desire to distance the technology from Bing, which failed to gain significant market share against Google despite the chatbot’s launch. A StatCounter report from August showed no measurable impact on Bing’s search engine dominance—a finding Microsoft disputes.

Key Updates to Copilot

Starting December 1, notable changes include:

  • Commercial Data Protection: Users signed in with a Microsoft Entra ID will benefit from enhanced privacy:

    • No data retention
    • No AI model training using user inputs
    • Microsoft cannot access the data
  • Expanded Availability: Copilot will now be accessible through:

    • Windows OS
    • Copilot.Microsoft.com
    • Bing search

Pricing and Accessibility

Copilot will be included at no extra cost in these Microsoft 365 plans:

  • E3 and E5
  • Business Premium
  • Business Standard

Starting December 1, it will also be added to Microsoft 365 F3. For other customers, standalone access will cost $5 per month.

The Bigger Picture

This rebranding is part of Microsoft’s broader AI strategy, which includes:

  • New custom AI chips
  • Multiple specialized Copilot offerings
  • Advanced tools like a deepfake creator

By consolidating under the Copilot brand, Microsoft aims to create a cohesive AI ecosystem across consumer and enterprise products—a clear challenge to compe*****s like ChatGPT.
