Instagram’s Threads app continues to evolve as a strong alternative to X (formerly Twitter), now introducing a modern twist on a classic social media feature: hashtags. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Threads is testing a new tagging system that retains hashtag functionality while eliminating the traditional “#” symbol from display.

- Display: Published tags appear as clean, clickable blue links without the “#” prefix

Key Differences From Traditional Hashtags
Single Tag Limit: Threads only allows one tag per post to:

Mosseri explained Threads’ design approach:
“With tags we’re trying something simple and slightly new… The hope is this design focuses tags more on communities and less on engagement hacking, while keeping Threads simple and easy to use.”
However, not everyone welcomes the change. Chris Messina, who originally proposed hashtags in 2007, criticized the removal of the “#” symbol as unnecessary:
“This is wild — Threads is actively repressing/suppressing the octothorpe (#). Why not remove the $ prefix in front of numbers too?”
