Microsoft Makes History with First U.S. Union Contract for Game Developers
In a landmark moment for the gaming industry, unionized quality assurance testers at ZeniMax Media have secured a tentative contract agreement with Microsoft. This deal marks Microsoft’s first union contract in the United States since acquiring ZeniMax (parent company of Bethesda) in 2021 for $7.5 billion.
Key Details of the Agreement
- Pay Increases: Workers will receive an across-the-board 13.5% raise effective July 1, 2025
- AI Protections: The contract includes previously negotiated terms regarding artificial intelligence use in development
- Ratification Vote: Union members will vote on final approval June 20
A Two-Year Journey to Unionization
The path to this agreement began in January 2023 when approximately 300 QA testers organized with the Communications Workers of America (CWA). Since then, these workers have been negotiating with Microsoft to establish fair labor standards in the gaming sector.
“This is a monumental victory for all current video game workers and for those that come after,” said Page Branson, QA tester and union bargaining committee member.
Expanding Union Presence in Gaming
While ZeniMax’s QA team was Microsoft’s first unionized gaming workforce, the movement has grown significantly:
- Bethesda Game Studios employees formed a “wall-to-wall” union in 2024
- CWA now represents over 2,000 Microsoft video game workers
