The Problem: AI Built Without Representation
Current AI systems frequently overlook the unique perspectives of people with disabilities. For example:

- Facial recognition tools often struggle with assistive devices like ventilators or headstraps
- Object identification systems may not account for how blind users capture images

Microsoft’s Collaborative Solutions
1. Project Insight with Team Gleason
Microsoft is working with Team Gleason to improve facial recognition for people with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). The project will:
- Collect facial imagery of ALS patients using assistive devices
- Create open datasets to improve AI training
- Enhance Microsoft’s cognitive services and make data publicly available
“Computer vision doesn’t represent the diverse looks and use cases of people with ALS,” explains Blair Casey of Team Gleason. “This collaboration will help change that.”
2. ORBIT Project with City University of London
The Object Recognition for Blind Image Training initiative focuses on:
- Building datasets entirely from blind users’ smartphone images
- Improving object recognition for everyday items
- Ensuring algorithms learn from real-world usage patterns
3. VizWiz Enhancements
Microsoft is expanding the VizWiz dataset to:
- Improve image captioning quality
- Add feedback when images are too blurry for analysis
- Better serve users needing immediate visual assistance

“This is technology that exists—it’s sitting on a shelf. Let’s put it to use,” says Casey. “When we talk about it, people will do more, and that’s something the community needs as a whole.”
