Movidius Takes Mobile Vision Processing to New Heights with Myriad 2
While not yet a household name, Movidius made waves earlier this year as the silicon powerhouse behind Google’s groundbreaking Project Tango - the experimental platform bringing advanced 3D sensing to mobile devices. Now, the company is raising the bar with its second-generation vision processor, the Myriad 2, promising revolutionary improvements in power efficiency and processing capability.
A Quantum Leap in Vision Processing Technology
The Myriad 2 represents a complete architectural overhaul from its predecessor, delivering:
- 20x greater processing efficiency per watt compared to Myriad 1
- 3 teraflops of computing power while consuming just 0.5 watts
- 12 programmable vector processors on a 28nm process
- Support for six simultaneous full HD inputs at 60fps
“This is a radically improved architecture,” explains Movidius CEO Remi El-Ouazzane. “The new memory architecture and processing cores allow us to handle multiple high-bandwidth inputs simultaneously - a key requirement we identified through our Project Tango collaboration.”

Beyond 3D Sensing: The Future of Mobile Imaging
While Project Tango focused on 3D spatial awareness, Movidius sees even broader applications for its technology:
- Computational photography combining multiple camera inputs for DSLR-quality mobile imaging
- Advanced auto-focus systems and infrared scene analysis
- Real-time 3D modeling for gaming and indoor navigation
“We’re bridging the gap between smartphone cameras and professional photography equipment,” says El-Ouazzane. “Our processors can merge data from multiple sensors to create images that were previously impossible on mobile devices.”
Building the Ecosystem: Developer Tools and Future Applications
Recognizing that hardware alone isn’t enough, Movidius is cultivating a developer community through its new Myriad Development Kit (MDK). The MDK includes:
- Full reference board
- Multi-camera/sensor support
- Development frameworks and tools
While currently available only to select developers under NDA, this toolkit represents Movidius’ commitment to creating a robust ecosystem around its vision processing technology.
Looking ahead, the company envisions its processors powering everything from autonomous drones to social robots and smart vehicles. As El-Ouazzane notes, “The Fire Phone’s emphasis on computer vision signals a broader industry trend - mobile devices are becoming intelligent visual platforms.”
With the Myriad 2, Movidius isn’t just improving upon its first-generation chip - it’s laying the foundation for a future where mobile devices see and understand the world with unprecedented clarity and intelligence.
